This Spicy Frozen Siomai Stew is a Korean inspired dish I came up several days ago. I got to try it this Saturday since I’m alone at home. So, what’s good about this recipe is, it has few ingredients and you can whip it up in 30 minutes. You can also adjust the level of heat depending on your liking.
Frozen siomai became an instant hit during this pandemic. You can actually see everyone selling it online. Unlike before, you can just find it in the grocery, now, big names in the fastfood industries are already selling it online. It may not be as delicious as those in the Chinese restaurants but they are really affordable and tasty. It is also our go to baon food. When we are too lazy to prepare our tomorrow’s lunch, we just simply steam it for 20 minutes and it’s ready. You can also fry it for extra flavor.
Since I’m alone and my parents are not a big fan of spicy dishes, I got to try it. The idea had been running in my mind and I actually bougth tofu last week. Speaking of which, the Dae Jang Gum firm tofu is probably the best tofu I ever bought in my life. The one I usually got from the market has a sour taste. However, this brand has a nice and clean taste. It does not ruin the entirety of your dish.
If you are a big fan of Korean food, you’ll probably have stocks of gochujang and other Korean condiments in your fridge. For this recipe I used the gochujang paste in tub and Kimchi seasoning which I usually added in my fried rice. Since these Korean condiments does not have that lingering spiciness, I also added a piece of bird’s eye chili.
Tips
This Spicy Frozen Siomai Stew can be paired with a bowl of Kimchi Fried Rice or simply fried rice and even egg noodles. I tried it both and it’s equally good. You can also tried it as pulutan with a cold bottle of beer. You can simply add the tofu while simmering but I decided to frying it. This give the tofu a nice chewy texture and that fried food flavor we all love.
I did not include the tofu in the main ingredients since you can leave it out or you can try it with it. Simply decide on how much tofu do you like to add. In my case, I bought 200 grams of firm tofu since I’m a huge fan of it.

1 teaspoon | Grated Ginger |
1 piece | Bird’s Eye Chili, chopped |

1 piece | Beef Bouillon Cube |
3 Tablespoons | Gochujang Paste |
2 Tablespoons | Kimchi Seasoning |
10 – 15 pieces | Frozen Siomai |

Procedure
Fried Tofu Preparation
Buy a good quality firm tofu. Sliced it to your desired sized and leave on a plate for 30 to 45 minutes to remove excess liquid. Deep fried until golden brown and set a side.
Spicy Frozen Siomai Stew
- Place vegetable oil, leeks, garlic, ginger and chili on a pan. Heat oil over low heat until the garlic is cooked.
- Add water, beef cube, gochujang and kimchi seasoning. Boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Add the frozen siomai and fried tofu. Simmer for another 15 minutes.
- Season with salt and garnish with chopped onion leeks.
- Serve with kimchi fried rice or egg noodles.
